Leslie Illingworth – On Target (part 2)

Here are the rest of the scans from Leslie Illingworth – on Target (read part 1 here). There are some really beautiful pieces; my favourites are Joseph McCarthy as the Statue of Liberty, Nikita Khrushchev and Nikolai Bulganin in Holbein’s The Ambassadors. If you get a bit lost regarding the subject matter there are some handy and informative notes at the end.

Illingworth retired from cartooning in the late 60s to concentrate on “farming and friendship”, although he still produced work as a guest cartoonist for the News of the World and in 1975 he was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Kent.

If you’re passing that way you can find a blue plaque dedicated to Illingworth at 8 Harbour Road, Barry in South Wales. Southwark Council in London have nominated him for another blue plaque for his former residence in Dulwich Village, but we’ll have to wait and see if he is picked.
