For many years the Japanese region of Mayama, a mountain district of Osaki city in Miyagi prefecture, has been inundated with reports of a number of kangaroo sightings.
During winter snowfalls in the region can reach 20 centimeters and temperatures fall below minus 10 C, but zoology specialist Hideo Obara, professor emeritus at Kagawa Nutrition University, asserts "It wouldn't be that unusual for a kangaroo to be living in Miyagi Prefecture. Kangaroos are good at adapting to different environments and some species live in areas where the temperature is below freezing."
Television crews and newspapers have set up hidden cameras but have failed to photograph any marsupials.
